SanFran is better than NY →
Thanks razorsharp for this link. As a resident of the Bay I have to say that I agree with everything that the author says…and that is why I am less than enamored by this area. Overall I have a hmmm, like / non-plussed feeling towards The Bay. In general I find the culture to be way too self-aware. Aware of their roles as technology ambassadors; aware of their roles of liberal standard...

50 great Mac apps →
I can vouch for several of these apps, but the coolest one that I have recently downloaded is Alfred. Alfred is so convenient that I don’t even go to my Applications folder any longer and I don’t go to the Google site (or the Firefox, Safari, etc. search bar) any longer for searches.
I am most excited to try out Fluid. If it works the way it is billed then the browser tab...

The misses and I have been on a workout kick lately. This one is not appropriate for us, but perhaps for you or one of your friends ? (Well, actually I could still use this as a workout I suppose)
New Gold Leaf: Using Git with Your Media Temple... →
Nice, I didn’t know that mediaTemple gridserver had Git installed.
It’s about time that web designers, not just developers, start using version control, and while staying as far as possible away from the SVN vs. Git battle that still rages on, I just use Git and pretend like SVN never existed.
We use media temple to host much of our clients work and stage up…

an example of html5 - wow →
I have been slow to keep up with the progress that is being made on the web standards front, but over the past few weeks I have been playing catchup aggressively. I have to say that HTML5 / CSS3 / jQuery / (other technologies?) have some very interesting and powerful potentials. I have no interest in getting into the Flash / Web standards debate because frankly I am not an evangelist. I advocate...

Cheap bourbon quality
(see previous catharsis response post)
I discovered Ancient Age bourbon while writing my dissertation. It was a recommend from a purveyor in North Carolina as one of the smoothest bourbons for the price. Now, it ain’t the smoothest BUT at ~$8 per 750ml it IS cheap!! I mean inexpensive.
( several buddies have been pleasantly surprised by AA’s smoothness after joking me for serving...

cool service. another example of centralizing oneself in the large wild web. The nice thing about this service is that they recognize MIPD (multiple internet personality disorder) and support multiple images and multiple email addresses under one account.

Does Apple need to see a therapist for control... →
I am a Mac fan. I am an Apple fan. I am an open source fan. As Apple increasingly comes across an UN-open I wonder how folks will react. What is the motivation for their autocratic control of applications? Not allowing crossplatform development? Ultimately, I don’t care.
To me it is like dating a model who will only eat salads. I sure wish we could have fun at a Pig Pickin’ but...

Google Short Links
Follow-up to my URL shortener link. If you have Google Apps and you have Google Short Links added to you site create a bookmark with this URL:
javascript:location.href=’http://(Google Apps Shortlinks URL)/admin.py?hash=True&main=True&action=EDIT&is_public=on&url=’+encodeURIComponent(location.href)
And viola, you have your own URL shortener! My next step is to make a...
damn! git
Am I the only one that finds git confusing? I get it (or git it) mostly, BUT all of the tutorials out there have assumed that you are using git with a remote server.
Personally, I like to run my own local version control system and then backup the repositories. I think that I have **finally** figured out how to do it. A short summary of my process: (you can get a helpful GIT cheat sheet from...
health social app done well →
I went to Red Rock cafe a few weeks ago and saw a wall collage with photos of people and their responses to the question “what do you do to stay/get healthy?”. This community art is particularly interesting because it is in the space of my current client. Social health will continue to gain traction. It is much more compelling than signing up for the 80’s-esque Bally’s...

How I explained REST to my wife →
One of the clearest explanations of REST that I have read. I discovered it reading Jud Valeski’s essay in Beautiful Data on Portable Data.
The web is a nuanced technology and I am shocked by some its basics. I thought that I understood “The Web” but my understanding is short of 3rd level Zen understanding (see levels of knowledge post - coming). As a new

~PP~ powerpoint bucks - the new dollar
I was chatting with a friend this morning who was lamenting a project for a client. (The usual: massive disorganization, bad project management, see Dilbert cartoon for a litany of the rest). I mentioned that much of what was happening seemed to be motivated by the semi-annual reports to the CEO for continued funding and blessings. Her response, ‘Wow, that has got to be the most expensive...

easiest way for web data collection →
Google Forms might be the easiest way to collect data from users on the web if: a) you don’t have a server b) don’t want to mess around with setting up a database and c) like EZ solutions.
board of advisors
I was just joking with rzrsharp that he was going to be on my board of advisors. After saying that I realized that a) he has always been a source of information and inspiration to me and b) having a board of advisors is a fab idea. Of course we all have networks - or should - but I sense that an interesting exercise would be to formalize the notion of a small cadre of folks to serve as your...

Diaper dates
What a great concept for the nuclear family - is that still a valid cultural theory? Diaper Dates are nights at the local movie theater where you can bring your infants. They adjust the theater by turning down the volume and leaving the lights turned up.
This is definitely going to be a hilarious first for me.
